The Göttingen International Handel Festival is the world's oldest festival for early music . They have been held annually in Göttingen since 1920 , last twelve days and had 22,000 visitors (2010).

Laurence Cummings has been the artistic director of the festival since 2012 . Tobias Wolff is the artistic director.

history

The stage works by Georg Friedrich Handel had been forgotten when the production of his opera Rodelinda by Oskar Hagen on June 26, 1920 in Göttingen not only marked the beginning of the festival, but also triggered many performances of his operas throughout Germany; its popularity has continued since then. Hanns Niedecken-Gebhard was senior director from 1922 to 1928 and from 1935 to 1938 . The festival was dominated from 1934 to 1953 by the conductor Fritz Lehmann .

The festival was initially organized by the Universitätsbund, after 1924 by the Handel Festival Community, and from 1931 to 2007 by the Göttinger Handel Society . V. and has been the Göttingen International Handel Festival since 2008. In addition to the Göttingen Handel Society and the Göttingen International Handel Festival Foundation, the European Union, the Federal Republic of Germany , the state of Lower Saxony , the city ​​of Göttingen and the district of Göttingen support the festival financially.
