Houses ( spelling HÄUSER ) is a magazine from the Gruner + Jahr publishing house in Hamburg. It appears six times a year. The first edition was published in 1979, initially as a special edition by Schöner Wohnen . Shortly afterwards, Häuser was created as an independent publication with its own editorial team. The frequency of publication has been increased from every six months to three months and now every two months. Once a year, the magazine honors innovative single-family home architecture with the Homes Award. The target group of the magazine are builders, architects and design enthusiasts. content

Houses shows current international architecture and design . The focus is primarily on single-family houses, both new and renovated. In addition, there are a few house-like residential models in apartment buildings. Floor plans and information about materials and construction methods are central to the presentation of the selected objects . Each issue is dedicated to a focus, such as “Conversion”, “Small Houses”, “In the Tradition of Modernity” or “Villas”. In addition, an iconic house is illuminated in more detail in the “ Classic ” series . Readers are informed in more detail about trends and new products from various areas in the “Forum” section. For example, specialist knowledge about materials such as concrete, windows, floor coverings, bricks, slate, linoleum and others is imparted. HÄUSER's digital offers can be found on the schoener-wohnen.de platform. Here, selected architect houses are shown in the “Architecture” section. The published objects are linked there, as are the floor plan downloads.

editorial staff

Founding editor-in-chief was Josef Kremerskothen, later replaced by Angelika Jahr . For many years Horst Rasch shaped the magazine as deputy editor-in-chief. In 1999 Wolfgang Nagel took over the editor-in-chief. Stephan Schäfer replaced him in 2012. In 2013 Anne Zuber took over the management.

Houses Award

Since 2004, the magazine has also presented the Houses Award, a renowned architecture prize for single-family homes. The selection is made by an expert jury with the participation of the Houses Award partners, including the Association of German Architects (BDA) and the Association of Private Builders (VPB). The houses award is presented as part of the JUNG architecture talks. The best houses of the award appear in the magazine and in an accompanying book. In addition to the 1st / 2nd / 3rd prize ranks and the Interior Prize are awarded up to 15 awards. In addition, readers of the magazine choose their favorites online as part of the readers' award.
