Hotel de Sens
The Hôtel de Sens is located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris , on Rue du Figuier near the banks of the Seine .
In the Middle Ages, other dioceses were subordinate to the Archbishop of Sens , including the diocese of Paris . The Archbishop of Sens had owned a palace in Paris since 1292 and when Tristan de Salazar became Archbishop in 1475, he had the palace rebuilt in the flamboyant style as one of the most beautiful houses in the city.
When Paris became an archbishopric itself in 1622, the archbishops of Sens gave up the house and rented it out. From 1689 to 1734 it was the seat of the "Messageries, coches et carrosses de Lyon, Bourgogne et Franche-Comté", a transport company. A canning factory, a jam factory, a glass factory, etc. followed in the building.
In 1911, the city acquired the Hôtel de Sens and had it restored. Today it houses the Bibliothèque Forney, dedicated to art (painting, architecture, sculpture, design, etc.) .
