The Archdiocese of Paris ( Latin Archidioecesis Parisiensis , French Archidiocèse de Paris ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in France .
history
Paris has been a bishopric since the 3rd century . The first bishop is Dionysius of Paris . The Paris diocese included roughly the area of Greater Paris until the 20th century . During the Middle Ages it was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Sens . On October 20, 1622, Paris was elevated to an archbishopric. The first Archbishop of Paris was Jean-François de Gondi (1622–1654).
Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger (1981-2005) was the first Parisian archbishop of Jewish origin and was considered one of the spokesmen for French Catholicism . For example, he organized protest rallies against the school reform planned by the socialist education minister Alain Savary , which would have endangered the existence of (usually Catholic) private schools, and he was committed to reconciliation between Jews and Christians .
