The Hôtel de Ville in Vannes is the town hall , built between 1880 and 1886 . It is located on Place Maurice-Marchais and has been classified as a Monument historique since December 2, 1992 .

Building history

Former mayor's office, around 1900

The Hôtel de Ville von Vannes was supposed to replace the old dilapidated Mairie building. This was located on the Place des Lices and was a building in the typical Breton style. Her horseshoe staircase was saved from demolition and was moved to the courtyard of the Hôtel de Limur in the 1960s .

The Hôtel de Ville is a project by the Republican Mayor Émile Burgault , who laid the foundations for the building in 1847. The town's log book mentions the formation of a commission for planning the project in 1861, which was postponed due to other priorities.

It was resumed 17 years later. On August 12, 1878, the town council of Vannes determined the building site on Place Napoléon (now Place Maurice Marchais ). After the election victory over the monarchists in 1878, the building was to be considered a symbol of republican ideas.

The construction of the town hall, the foundation stone of which was laid on December 12, 1880, took six years. The cost, estimated at 410,937.90 francs in June 1880, came to almost 800,000 francs in the end. The increased construction costs were one of the reasons for the victory of the monarchists in the municipal elections in 1888, which denounced the town hall as "Burgault madness".

The Hôtel de Ville was opened on July 11, 1886 by the Minister of Post Félix Granet, accompanied by Mayor Émile Burgault, Under-Secretary of State for the Interior Jean Bernard du Doubs and local personalities.

restoration

Town hall clock and bell tower

In June 2010, the upper part of the bell tower was removed and subjected to necessary repairs, as it has gradually suffered damage since construction began. The measures also aimed to restore the entire roof, including the roof turret , the decorative elements made of zinc and the chimney . The cost of the partial restoration is estimated at 3 million euros over a period of four years.

architecture

The town hall was built according to plans by the Vanner architect Armand Charrier in the Italian Renaissance style and is a copy of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris . The building is framed by two side wings to the north and south. The main facade is adorned with a frontispiece bearing a town hall clock and the city's coat of arms on the gable. The little turret rising above it with a carillon is reminiscent of a belfry . The facade is particularly rich in decoration, there are square pillars on the side wings, half-columns on the central wing, Corinthian capitals , alternating triangular and curved gables, cartouches and busts as well as volutes .
