The mounds of fog

The barrow of fog is a bicameral system grave from the New Stone Age on the North Sea island Amrum in Nordfriesland in Schleswig-Holstein . The freely accessible archaeological site excavated in the 1950s with the Sprockhoff no. 11 is located in the northwest of the municipality of Nebel in the Amrumer Dunes nature reserve , about 500 m northwest of the Vogelkoje Meeram . The megalithic bed is part of the Amrum Archaeological Area.

Excavation findings

Nebel's megalithic bed, also referred to as a large stone grave, is a rare, rectangular megalithic bed in an east-west orientation with two transverse chambers. The border is badly damaged, many stones are missing. Nevertheless, the size can be specified as around 35 m × 7 m. The long bed was examined by Karl Kersten in 1951 . In the burial chambers he discovered several bones and skulls, flint axes, arrowheads, richly decorated ceramics and amber beads as grave goods.

The eastern chamber

The eastern chamber is an enlarged dolmen . The long sides consist of two carrier stones, the northern narrow side of one carrier stone. On the southern side there is half a bearing stone and a 0.35 m high threshold stone. The clear width of the chamber is 2.5 × 1.4 m. There were two capstones on the chamber, one has been displaced, the other has fallen into the chamber.

The western chamber

This chamber is similar to the eastern one, but a little longer and narrower. The long sides are also formed from two pairs of carrier stones. The chamber only has one capstone.
