The Sông Hương or Hương Giang ( Hán Tự :香江), translated as River of perfumes , fragrances River or Perfume River , is a slow-flowing river in the central - Vietnamese province of Thua Thien-Hue .

Name interpretation

There are various theories about the origin of this name: one refers to the pollen and flowers that float on the water in spring, another to the fragrant precious woods that were transported on the river.

Source rivers and upper reaches

The river is fed by two source rivers that arise in the Trường Sơn mountain range. The eastern tributary Tả Trạch takes its course from the eastern part of the Trường Sơn mountains over 55 impressive waterfalls towards the northwest. The shorter tributary Hữu Trạch passes 14 raging waterfalls and the Tuần or Bảng Lãng pier before it reaches the confluence, the Bảng Lãng fork. The river heads north past the seven royal tombs of the Nguyễn dynasty , the temples of Hòn Chén and Ngọc Trản, then northwest through the plains of Nguyệt Biều and Lương Quán, and further northeast.

Middle course

The middle reaches near the village of Kim Long stands on a hill on the riverbank, the seven-storey Thien Mu - or Linh Mu Pagoda (Pagoda of the celestial woman Hán Tự : 姥寺), a symbol of the old imperial city of Hue , by the in May 1963 Protests against the Ngô ôình Diệm regime began in Sài Gòn. The Perfume River continues through the city of Huế with the citadel of Huế , where it is crossed by the Trường Tiền or Tràng Ti -n Bridge from 1899, which was constructed by Gustave Eiffel . This is followed by the Đông Ba canal, which branches off to the left and shortens an arc of the river, and the river island of Cồn Hến .

muzzle

The Hương Giang flows into the Tam Giang lagoon and the South China Sea near Thun An .

The Sông Hương in poetry and music

Sông Hương and the mountain Ngự Bình are sung by Duy Khánh in the song Ai ra xứ Huế (Who longs for Huế) :

Ai ra xứ Huế thì ra
Ai về là về núi Ngự
Ai về là về sông Hương
Nước sông Hương còn vương chưa cạn
Chim núi Ngự tìm bạn bay về
Người tình quê ơi người tình quê thương nhớ xin trở về
Who longs for hat,
Who goes to the Ngự Bình,
Anyone who goes to Sông Hương likes to go
The water of the Sông Hương caresses you forever,
The birds of Ngự Bình return to their loved ones,
Beloved, oh beloved, if you miss me, please come back too!
