HC Cradock , actually Augusta Whiteford , married Cradock (* 1863 ; † October 15, 1941 in Dorking ), was an English children's writer who used the initials of her husband Henry Cowper Cradock as an author .

Life

Augusta Whiteford was the daughter of an Anglican clergyman. The future teacher grew up in Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire . In 1893 she married Henry Cowper Cradock. In 1905, their probably only daughter, Aline Mary, was born.

In 1908, George Bell & Sons in London published her first book, The Care of babies: a reading book for girls . The use of a male pseudonym was common among women writers at that time (see e.g. Franziska von Reitzenstein ). In 1909 she published the continuation of the textbook entitled The Training of children from cradle to school: a guide for young mothers, teachers and nurses .

Also in 1909 her husband became Vicar of Birstall , West Yorkshire . From 1915 to 1917 he was Vicar of Whitley Lower , Kirklees , and then in 1918 Chaplain at St. Peter's Memorial Home for Sick Women in Woking . In 1915 Augusta Cradock wrote the first book in her successful "Josephine" series, a doll story whose individual titles were published by Blackie & Son , SPCK , Thomas Nelson and George Harrap . In addition to many other children's books written by her, Thomas Nelson published The Smith Family in 1931 , also a doll story, partly illustrated by SG Hulme Beaman (1887–1932) and Honor C. Appleton (1879–1951).

In 1927 her husband retired and the couple moved to the London borough of Hendon . He died on July 18, 1933. In 1941, Teddy Bear's farm appeared from her Teddy Bear story series, the last book published during her lifetime, with line drawings by Joyce L. Brisley . Augusta Cradock died in 1941 at the age of 77 as a result of a stroke .

The Munich record label Little Teddy Recordings named itself after its fictional teddy bear character.
