Intel HD Graphics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HD Graphics is used by Intel as an umbrella term for a number of graphics processors integrated into the CPU . This makes HD Graphics the successor to the Intel GMA , which was integrated into chipsets . While the graphics units of the Core i series are differentiated by different model numbers, only "HD Graphics" are used as a name for Pentium and Celeron models.

Models

CPU Core-i5-2500 with built-in GPU HD 2000

With each generation of processors, a new generation of graphics is integrated into the processor.

Westmere

1st core generation with 5th graphics generation: In January 2010, Clarkdale and Arrandale processors with Ironlake graphics were introduced, and marketed as Celeron , Pentium , or Core with HD graphics:

Surname Shader units GFLOPS @ clock frequency Remarks
HD Graphics 12 shader units 0043.2 GFLOPS 0@ 900 MHz

Sandy Bridge

2nd core generation with 6th generation graphics: In January 2011, the Sandy Bridge processors were presented with the “ 2nd generation ”. Generation "HD Graphics:

Surname Shader units GFLOPS @ clock frequency Remarks
HD Graphics 06 shader units for Celeron and Pentium
HD Graphics 2000 06 shader units and additional functions 0064.8 GFLOPS @ 1350 MHz from Core i3
HD Graphics 3000 12 shader units and additional functions 0129.6 GFLOPS @ 1350 MHz from Core i3

With Sandy Bridge , Intel integrated the GPU with the CPU on the same semiconductor chip for the first time . The GPU supports DirectX 10.1 and can dynamically adjust its clock rate depending on the load ("turbo clock"). When fully expanded, the integrated GPU was sold under the name HD3000 and had 12 shader units. With only 6 active shader units, the integrated GPU was called the HD2000 . In addition, the clock rate of the integrated GPU varies depending on the processor model, which changes the performance of the GPU, but this does not change the name of the integrated GPU.

If further functions of the integrated GPU were deactivated, the integrated GPU was only declared as HD Graphics without any model number. This way, the slimmed-down GPU is found in Pentium and Celeron models. Features that are disabled include Intel's Quick Sync , which can be used to quickly encode videos with certain codecs . The decoding functions have also been restricted so that the Clear Video HD and InTru-3D technology are not available.

Ivy Bridge

3rd core generation with 7th generation graphics: On April 24, 2012, the Ivy Bridge series was presented with the “3. Generation "of Intel HD Graphics:

Surname Shader units GFLOPS @ clock frequency Remarks
HD Graphics 06 shader units for Celeron and Pentium
HD Graphics 2500 06 shader units and additional functions 0110.4 GFLOPS @ 1150 MHz from Core i3
HD Graphics 4000 16 shader units and additional functions 0332.8 GFLOPS @ 1300 MHz from Core i3

With Ivy Bridge , Intel introduced an integrated GPU for the first time that supports DirectX 11 as well as OpenCL and, with the latest drivers, OpenGL 4.0. When fully expanded, the integrated GPU is sold under the designation "HD4000" and has 16 shader units, the versions equipped with only 6 active shader units are labeled HD2500 . In the most powerful Ivy Bridge CPUs, in which the clock rate of the HD4000 GPU is the highest, it can sometimes be faster than some dedicated mobile graphics cards, as current benchmarks show. Like all Intel (System on a Chip) variants, the Intel HD 4000 can also communicate directly with the cache of the main processor.

For some low-power mobile CPUs, video decoding is limited, while no desktop CPU has this limitation.

Haswell

Intel Haswell i7-4771 CPU, with integrated HD Graphics 4600 (GT2)

4th core generation with 7½. Graphics generation: On September 12, 2012, the Haswell architecture with 4 different integrated GPU models was presented:

Surname Shader units GFLOPS @ clock frequency Remarks
HD Graphics GT1 e, 10 shader units 0184 GFLOPS @ 1150 MHz
HD Graphics 4200, 4400, 4600, P4600, P4700 GT2 e, 20 shader units 0432 GFLOPS @ 1350 MHz
HD Graphics 5000 GT3 e, 40 shader units 0704 GFLOPS @ 1100 MHz double the performance of the HD4xxx GPUs, in CPUs with a TDP of 15  W.
Iris Graphics 5100 GT3 e, 40 shader units 0832 GFLOPS @ 1300 MHz corresponds to the HD Graphics 5000 with a higher clock rate of 1300 instead of 1100 MHz in CPUs with a TDP of 28 W.
Iris Pro Graphics 5200 GT3e, 40 shader units 0832 GFLOPS @ 1300 MHz corresponds to the HD Graphics 5000 with an additional 128  MB embedded DRAM (eDRAM) cache

With the introduction of the Intel Haswell micro-architecture , the Intel HD Graphics was further revised. It now supports DirectX 11.1 and has 40 shader units in the maximum expansion stage (models "HD5000" to "Iris 6100"). The GPUs marked with the addition "Iris Pro" also have their own cache with a size of 128 MB, which increases the performance significantly and with the Iris Pro 5200 model only about 15% behind the performance of mobile middle-class graphics chips like the Geforce GT650M (in the version with DDR3 RAM). The smaller expansion stages with 20 shader units are named "HD4200", "HD4400" and "HD4600". The internal video decoder (called Multi Format Codec Engine (MFX) ) has also been heavily redesigned so that it can now even decode three parallel 4K videos.

Broadwell

5th core generation with 8th generation graphics: In November 2013, Broadwell K desktop processors were introduced with Iris Pro graphics. For more details see.

The following integrated GPU models have been introduced for Broadwell processors:

Kaby Lake

7th core generation with 9½. Graphics generation: With Kaby Lake CPUs, 4K videos can be played in HEVC or VP9 without any significant CPU load. This ensures quieter fans and longer runtimes when playing videos. Kaby Lake GPUs also support the hardware DRM PlayReady 3.0 SL3000, which some providers such as Netflix require for 4K streaming. There is also support for Thunderbolt 3.

Coffee Lake

According to the current Intel plan, Coffee Lake in 14nm ++ will come to Kaby Lake. The 8th core generation and 10th generation graphics will start in autumn 2017 in the other chips for more powerful notebooks and desktops after the Kaby Lake Refresh in UHD notebooks.

Whiskey Lake / Amber Lake

Due to problems in the new technologies at 10 nm (2019 target date), another optimized generation with 14 nm +++ is now being inserted. GT1, GT2 and GT3 are still in the program.

Comet Lake

Another 14 nm generation

Cannon Lake

Coffee Lake came to Kaby Lake in mid-2017 in 14 nm ++ and Cannon Lake as a 10 nm shrink. A new architecture was only then on Intel's roadmap: Ice Lake (10 nm). Cannon Lake was postponed to 2019 in mass production. Only a few processors with sufficient yield will probably appear in autumn 2018.

Ice Lake

Icelake will be released in 2019 or later. Driver development is in full swing.

table

Vulkan 1.0 is supported starting with Skylake. Vulkan 1.1 is supported from Kaby Lake. OpenGL 4.5 with version 4729 or higher has also been available for HD500 and HD600 since mid-2017. The current status for Windows can be checked at Intel. OpenGL 4.6 was completed with Mesa 19.3. Before that, SPIR-V was missing. Vulkan 1.1 is already available from Mesa 18.1. With Mesa 20.0, a new Gallium3D-based driver for Intel graphics from generation 8 (Broadwell and newer) accelerates OpenGL and enables Vulkan 1.2; the previous driver i965 remains for generations up to Haswell.
