Skylake is the code name of a processor microarchitecture from the chip manufacturer Intel , which was released in the third quarter of 2015 as the successor to the Intel Broadwell microarchitecture . Like the Broadwell processors, the Skylake processors are based on a 14 nm process. As the sixth generation of the Intel Core family, most processor numbers start with a "6".

design

Skylake works with the new socket 1151 presented in August 2015 . Like the previous generation, Intel exposes all Skylake chips in the 14 nm FinFET process. Initially, chipsets with the code name Sunrise Point ( Intel 100 series ) are used as the chipset, and from 2016 also with the code name Union Point. The new processors support DDR3 L and DDR4 RAM. Some variants also have an L4 cache. Depending on the model, the processors have two or four processor cores .

Improvements

The chips have been optimized in terms of power consumption in particular. Skylake supports Thunderbolt 3 and 5K displays with 60 Hz, as well as the simultaneous control of three 4K displays . The integrated graphics chips with a maximum frequency of 1.15 GHz achieve up to 1152  GFLOPS and enable significantly better graphics performance than the chips of the previous generation. They support DirectX 12 . The "HD Graphics" are given names made up of three-digit numbers from the 500 range (510/515/520/530/540/550). For the first time, Xeon processors are also available for mobile computing.

Compared to the previous architecture, Skylake brings expanded support for hardware-accelerated decoding and encoding of multimedia formats (“Intel Quick Sync Video” - or “Quick Sync” function for short). For example, Skylake accelerates the 8-bit decoding / encoding of H.265 / HEVC content, partial 10-bit decoding of H.265 / HEVC content, partial decoding / encoding of VP9 content and the encoding of JPEG images with a resolution of up to 16,000 × 16,000 pixels.

All Skylake processors support the instruction sets MMX , AES-NI , Intel 64 , SSE , SSE2 , SSE3 , SSSE3 , SSE4 , SSE4.1 , SSE4.2 and SGX , processors from i3 also AVX and AVX2, processors from i5 also TSX and TXT . The implementation of AVX-512 has been announced for the Xeon EP / EX models .

The mobile Core M processors have new model numbers based on the i3, i5 and i7 nomenclature: m3, m5 and m7.

Processor variants

In 2015, 51 new Skylake processors appeared:

  • Five 4.5 watt Y processors for tablets and Intel Compute Sticks
  • Ten 15-watt and four 28-watt U processors for tablets and thin notebooks
  • One 35-watt and six 45-watt H processors for high-performance notebooks
  • Two 45 watt Xeon processors for mobile workstations
  • Twelve 65-watt and nine 35-watt T desktop processors
  • Two 91-watt K processors for overclocking for desktop PCs

Chipset for Skylake generation

New chipsets are required compared to the Broadwell generation:

  • 100 series these chipsets are partly also suitable for Kaby Lake processors with an update .
  • 200 series X299 for Skylake-X, otherwise also suitable for Kaby Lake processors
