The HMAS Newcastle was an Adelaide-class frigate of the Royal Australian Navy . It was the sixth unit in its class and named after the Australian city of Newcastle in the state of New South Wales . In 2019 it was sold to Chile and put into service there as Capitán Prat (FFG-11) in 2020 .

history

The HMAS Newcastle was based on the American Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate on 21 July 1989 at the shipyard Marine Engineering Consolidated Australian in Williamstown in the state of Victoria to put Kiel . It was launched on February 21, 1992 and put into service on December 11, 1993.

From December 19, 1999 to January 26, 2000, Newcastle was part of the International Force East Timor during the 1999 East Timor crisis , which took place under Australian leadership. In 2005 a deployment in the Persian Gulf followed .

In early December 2006, the Newcastle was the first of three Australian naval vessels that were on site in Fiji after the coup to evacuate possible Australian citizens from the country. The next two were the amphibious transport ship HMAS Kanimbla and the utility HMAS Success . However, the operation was not necessary, so that the ships returned to Australia at the end of December of that year. In July and August 2010 the frigate took part in the biennial RIMPAC maneuver .

The frigate was decommissioned in Sydney at the end of June 2019.

In December 2019 she was sold to Chile together with the sister ship HMAS Melbourne (FFG 05) . There she was put into service as Capitán Prat (FFG-11) on April 15, 2020.

Awards included two Battle Honors , one for their service in the International Force East Timor and another for their service in the Persian Gulf in 2002 and 2003 during the War on Terror .
