The HMS Plymouth is a Rothesay-class frigate of the British Navy . It is named after the English city of Plymouth and was in service from 1959 to 1988. After it was decommissioned, it was open to the public for inspection until 2006.

history

During her active service, she was used in the Far East and offshore Australia. She took part in the Cod Wars between Great Britain and Iceland. During the Falklands War of 1982, she was badly damaged by bombs and cannons. An air attack by Dagger fighters of the Argentine Air Force was repulsed; however, the shooting down of two machines has not been confirmed. After the war she returned to Rosyth Dockyard. It was repaired there.

In 1988 the Plymouth was decommissioned. Until February 6, 2006 she could be seen in Birkenhead alongside other ships and submarines. Until 2014 she was moored in the Vittoria Dock. In August the Polish tug Amber 11 began to tow the ship to Aliaga, Turkey, where it is to be scrapped.

On September 1, 2014, the Turkish authorities were requested not to allow the HMS Plymouth to enter Turkish territorial waters. It is about preserving the ship. In addition, radioactive waste is contained on board the ship. In September, various political rivals in the city of Plymouth collect signatures for a new Type 26 frigate to be named HMS Plymouth .

The ship has now arrived in Aliaga and is being scrapped there. Since 2009 the frigate has given its name to Plymouth Island , an island in the archipelago of South Georgia in the South Atlantic .
