Haageocereus platinospinus is a species of plant in the genus Haageocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet is derived from the Latin words platinum for 'silver' and spinus for 'thorny' and refers to the gray to silvery thorns.

Haageocereus platinospinus grows with several creeping shoots that reach a diameter of 5 to 8 centimeters. There are 13 to 15 ribs on which there are fairly large, elongated areoles . The light to dark brown thorns gray with age or become silver-white. The one to four strong, awl central spines are up to 7 centimeters long. The ten to 13 radial spines have a length of up to 1.5 centimeters.

The white flowers reach a length of up to 7 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Haageocereus platinospinus is distributed in Peru in the Arequipa and Tacna regions at altitudes of 800 to 2650 meters.

It was first described as Cereus platinospinus in 1931 by Erich Werdermann and Curt Backeberg . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Haageocereus in 1936 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Binghamia platinospina (Werderm & Backeb.) Werderm. (1937, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4) and Borzicactus platinospinus (Werderm. & Backeb.) Borg (1937) .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
