Location of Haanrade in the municipality of Kerkrade |
Haanrade ( German Haenrath ) is a district ( Dutch buurt ) in the southeastern Dutch border municipality of Kerkrade .
The place was first mentioned as Hagenrode in the Annales Rodenses , a medieval manuscript of the nearby Klosterrath Abbey ( Rolduc Abbey ). The district is in the northeast of Kerkrade west of the worm in the worm valley. The local church of Heilig Hart van Jezus , built in 1931, is worth seeing . Its external masonry consists almost entirely of natural stone from Kunrad, as it was mined in South Limburg.
The border crossing to Germany and a small open-cast lignite mine (see Limburger Revier ) in the west of the town were economically important in the 20th century . Today Haanrade is a residential area with local recreation and sports facilities and a lively club life. Apart from a few services, there are hardly any commercial enterprises there.
