The port of Murmansk ( Russian Мурманский морской торговый порт ) is a seaport in Russia . It is used as a freight port and military base for the Russian Naval War Fleet ( Northern Fleet ). The operating and management company had been a state stock corporation since 1994; the majority of shares have been held by the Russian billionaire Andrei Igorewitsch Melnichenko since 2013 . From 1941 to 1945 it was the port of destination for the important northern sea convoys .

The ice-free port, which is strategically located for the Russian Northeast Passage , is located in the north of the Kola Peninsula and on the western outskirts of Murmansk ( Northwestern Federal District ) on the Barents Sea .
Facilities
The largest floating dock in Russia with a length of 330 meters and a load capacity of 80,000 tons was built in 1980 in Sweden for Murmansk. The dock sank at the end of October 2018 at its place of use, ship repair shop number 82, as a result of a power failure. It was planned to raise the floating dock.
