The Hafenmarktbrunnen (also Georgsbrunnen ) is a listed fountain on the Hafenmarkt in Heilbronn . The fountain dates back to the late 16th century. After the historic fountain was destroyed in the air raids on Heilbronn in 1944, it has been replaced by a fountain designed by Ernst Yelin since 1955 .

history

The Heilbronn harbor market was built in 1593 on the site of an old cemetery that had previously been removed and paved over. This happened around the time when, with the construction of the Teuchel line from the Cäcilienbrunnen to Heilbronn city center , it was possible to dispense with a larger number of pump wells for the city's water supply. The fountain then drew its water from the Cäcilienbrunnen. The octagonal well box was made of Heilbronn sandstone , the water poured into the well box from eight pipes and four gargoyles. On the fountain column there was a sandstone figure of St. George on his horse fighting the dragon, which Jakob Müller originally created for the Fleinertorbrunnen in 1591 . Steinmetz Müller, who created a total of five wells or wells in Heilbronn, received 45 guilders and one Malter Frucht for this work. However, after the new George figure had been placed on the fountain column of the Hafenmarktbrunnen, an older figure with the same motif remained on the Fleinertorbrunnen until Müller created a new figure for it in 1601.

The Roßmühle was located directly on the harbor market and has been used to draw water with horse power since 1559. This mill died after the well was built, and the Kraichgau Archive was later built in its place .

In 1732 the old case of the well had to be replaced due to a leak. From 1811 the line from the Cäcilienbrunnen was shut down and then fed from the Pfühlbrunnen . The fountain was renovated in the 1860s and then again in 1895, whereby the sandstone fountain column was exchanged for one made of more weather-resistant granite and the old fountain figure and the decorations of the column head were replaced by galvanoplastic replicas made of bronze.

The multi-century fountain was destroyed on December 4, 1944 during an air raid on Heilbronn . The teacher Wilhelm Rieth managed to uncover the statue of George from the rubble, but it was stolen before he could take it away. The remnants of the fountain were removed in 1953. The Stuttgart sculptor Ernst Yelin created the successor in 1955, which in turn shows Georg fighting the dragon on the old square, but now ridden in the simple design language of the 1950s. The new well box has a three-part rose window as a floor plan.
