The Hafis memorial stone in Leipzig commemorates the Persian poet Hafis (around 1320 - around 1389), whose volume of poems Dīwān Goethe inspired to his West-Eastern Divan . The memorial was erected around 1972, presumably at the instigation of Iranian citizens living in exile in the GDR , and restored in 1996. It is a listed building .

location

The stone is located in the Meusdorf district in front of the property at Höltystraße 37 on the corner of Hafisweg. This path has been named after the poet since 1950 after it was previously called Langenauweg.

shape

The memorial stone is a 1.60 m high square column made of gray sandstone . The front shows a full- length relief of the poet and underneath his name in Arabic script .

Varia

There has been a Goethe Hafis memorial on Beethovenplatz in Weimar since 2000 . The Goethe & Hafis Verlag has been in Bonn since 2001 .
