1972 (memorial stone) in memory of the Persian national poet Hafis (born around 1320, died around 1389), sandstone stele, rarity, historical record

In the corner of Hafisweg there is probably the only monument erected in Germany for the Persian national poet Khwa-djeh Schams al-Din Mohammad Shirazi, known as Hafiz. The simple gray sandstone stele on an only slightly larger base was erected on the initiative of politically active Iranian citizens who had been granted asylum in the GDR during the Shah regime. The occasion in 1972 was the 140th anniversary of the death of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who had read Hafiz's poems in translation and who had inspired him to compose his poetry collection West-Eastern Divan (1819). Hafiz, son of a family of craftsmen, lived in Shiraz from around 1320 to 1389, taught at a madrasah, was temporarily employed as a civil servant and is considered the most important Persian poet. On the front of the 160 cm high monument, the bas-relief of an imaginary portrait (full-figure relief) of the poet and his name in Persian script (Arabic letters) underneath, inscriptions on both sides: on the left the historical background on the relationship between the two poets and on the right Goethe's hymn to Hafiz from his West-eastern divan. Renovation in 1996 by the S. Hackauf company on behalf of the City of Leipzig Cultural Office. LfD / 2007
