The Crataegus crus-galli ( Crataegus crus-galli ), also Hahn Dorn called, is a species of hawthorn ( Crataegus ) within the family of the rose family (Rosaceae).

description

The cockspur hawthorn is a deciduous shrub or small tree that reaches heights of growth of 5 to 7 meters. It is hairless in all parts of the plant. The bark is gray to gray-green.

The branches are covered with numerous strong thorns up to 6 centimeters long . The 2 to 5 centimeters long coarse-skinned, later almost leathery leaves are obovate or spatulate in shape. The spade base is long down on the petiole. The leaves turn orange-red in autumn.

Between May and June, the rooster thorn bears white flowers about 1.5 centimeters in diameter . Most of the flowers have 10 stamens . When the fruit is ripe, two round, fleshy and light red apple fruits are usually formed per flower . They measure 10 to 15 millimeters in diameter and carry the upright persistent calyx .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34, 51 or 68.

distribution

The cockspur hawthorn is native to the nemoral zone of eastern North America. However, the species was planted in many places by humans in Central Europe and has partly become wild .

It thrives in sunny to partially shaded locations on acidic to calcareous, light to heavy soils.

In addition to the nominate form Crataegus crus-galli var. Crus-galli , the variety Crataegus crus-galli var. Capillata coffin was also created. described .
