Half Nelson is a collection of ten duets, some of which are exclusive to this compilation. The duet I Told a Lie to My Heart with Hank Williams was only possible thanks to modern studio technology, as Williams had died in 1953.

Many of the songs are cover versions by other artists. In addition, some songs were already released. Pancho and Lefty is by Townes Van Zandt and was also the theme song of a 1983 collaboration album by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard . To All the Girls I've Loved Before , a song by Hal David and Albert Hammond, was taken from Julio Iglesias ' album 1100 Bel Air Place (1984). They All Went to Mexico came from Carlos Santana's album Havana Moon .
Exclusively recorded for the album were Seven Spanish Angels with Ray Charles , the Rolling Stones cover Honky Tonk Women with Leon Russell , Are There Any More Real Cowboys? with Neil Young , Slow Movin 'Outlaw with Lacy J. Dalton , Texas on a Saturday Night with Mel Tillis and the Nelson classic Half a Man with George Jones and the Hank Williams duet.

Single releases
Seven Spanish Angels was the first single from the album and was released in November 1984. The piece, written by Troy Seals and Eddie Setser for Nelson and Ray Charles , reached number 1 on the US Hot Country Songs on the Billboard charts.
