The halls for new art

The Hallen für Neue Kunst was a museum for contemporary art , especially for the new art since 1965 in Schaffhausen , Switzerland. They were founded and built by the artist Urs Raussmüller in 1982/1983 and existed until 2014.

history

The Hallen für Neue Kunst was founded and built by Urs Raussmüller in 1982/1983. The conviction that New Art above all needs time and space to develop its effect led him to strive for a permanent situation for important, mainly large-format installations by American and European artists. For this purpose, 5,500 m² of a former textile factory on the banks of the Rhine were converted into an exhibition space for new art.

The museum was a privately run institution. The Raussmüller Collection , a non-profit association, was responsible for the works of art and the cultural projects . The city and canton of Schaffhausen contributed financially to the institution.

At the beginning of 2014 the halls for new art were closed. In June 2014, the final closure and the partial move to Basel was announced. This was in connection with a legal dispute over the ownership of the central installation Das Kapital Raum 1970–1977 by Joseph Beuys from 2004, which in 2014 went to the disadvantage of the museum.

exhibition

The focus of the exhibition was Joseph Beuys' two-story room sculpture Das Kapital Raum 1970–1977 , which the artist himself had set up in the newly built museum in 1984. It was shown for the first time at the 1980 Venice Biennale.

An extensive collection of architectural sculptures by Bruce Nauman and large-format groups of works by the pioneers of Minimal Art , Arte Povera , Land Art and Conceptual Art were shown.

Carl Andre's work Cuts (1967), which was rarely exhibited due to its dimensions (9.35 × 13 m, approx. 18 t), found its place in the exhibition. The Italian artist Mario Merz built an entire villaggio (village) with igloos, vines and neon lights. Sol LeWitt contributed numerous variations of cubes and wall drawings from the 1960s to 1990s.

Jannis Kounellis took the situation of the building into account: his works relate to the space around them and comment on place and time. The halls also showed a selection of Robert Ryman's paintings and Robert Mangold's New Painting . They were set up together with the artists. Other works in the collection are by Dan Flavin , Donald Judd , Richard Long and Lawrence Weiner .
