Halocarpus is a genus of plants inthe stone slab family (Podocarpaceae). All three Halocarpus species are unique to New Zealand .

Vegetative characteristics

Halocarpus species are mainly shrubs and one species forms trees up to 25 meters high . The foliage leaves are not needle-shaped, but rather have lanceolate leaves when they are young, later scaly leaves that are coarse and leathery.

Generative characteristics

Halocarpus species are dioecious, separate sexes ( diocesan ). On the seeds, which ripen in the second year, there is a small, light-colored aril .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Halocarpus was created by Christopher John Quinn in Taxonomy of Dacrydium Sol. ex Lamb. emend. de foliage. (Podocarpaceae). In: Australian Journal of Botany , Volume 30, Issue 3, 1982, pp. 311-320. Type species is Halocarpus bidwillii (Hook. F. Ex Kirk) Quinn .

All Halocarpus species are unique to New Zealand .

There are only three species in the genus Halocarpus :

  • Halocarpus bidwillii (Hook. F. Ex Kirk) Quinn (Syn .: Dacrydium bidwillii Hook. F. Ex Kirk ): They are shrubs with a growth height of up to 3.5 meters, which in the montane to subalpine altitude range at altitudes from 600 to Grow 1500 meters. It occurs on New Zealand's North and South Island and Stewart Island .
  • Halocarpus biformis (Hook.) Quinn (Syn .: Dacrydium biforme (Hook.) Pilg. , Podocarpus biformis Hook. , Dacrydium colensoi Kirk non Hook. F. ): They are shrubs to small trees with heights of no more than 10 meters. The often small locations are mostly on good soil and have abundant rainfall. It occurs on the New Zealand North Island to Stewart Island.
  • Halocarpus kirkii (F.Muell. Ex Parl.) Quinn (Syn .: Dacrydium kirkii F.Muell. Ex Kirk ): They are trees with heights of growth of up to 25 m and trunk diameters of 1 meter. They mostly grow in lowland forests.
