Halothamnus glaucus is a species of the genus Halothamnus inthe foxtail family ( Amaranthaceae ). The home is in central and southwest Asia. In China, it only thrives in northern Xinjiang in the Gobi desert, in semi-deserts and arid slopes.

features

Halothamnus glaucus grows as a subshrub and reaches heights of up to 1 meter. The bark of the branches is blue-green and lightly striped. The semi-stemmed, fleshy leaves are linear with a length of up to 50 mm and a width of 0.7 to 2.0 mm wide.

The bracts and bracts of the lower flowers are similar to the leaves, the bracts are broadly skin-margined at the base. The flowers are 3.5 to 5.0 mm long with lanceolate, ovate bloom . The scars are rounded at the top.

The winged fruit reaches 11 to 17 mm in diameter, its wings set in or slightly below the center. The fruit tube is broadly cylindrical, often widened downwards, and has rounded-oval pits at the base.

Occurrence

The distribution area of Halothamnus glaucus stretches from eastern Turkey through Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, northern Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan to the People's Republic of China (Dzungaria, possibly also Kashgaria and Mongolia). It grows in dry semi-deserts or mountain steppes on stony or loamy, sometimes also on salty soils, up to approx. 2000 m above sea level.

use

Halothamnus glaucus is an important pasture forage crop for camels, sheep and goats and is cultivated in places. In earlier times alkalis were extracted from the ashes of plants . The roots and parts of the plants above ground contain alkaloids .

Systematics

Illustration of Halothamnus glaucus

It was first described in 1798 under the name Salsola glauca by Friedrich August Marschall von Bieberstein , who also dealt with the species in further publications in 1800 and 1806. In 1981 it was placed by Victor Petrovič Botschantzev as Halothamnus glaucus in the genus Halothamnus .

Halothamnus glaucus is divided into three subspecies:

  • Halothamnus glaucus (M.Bieb.) Botsch. subsp. glaucus ( Syn . : Salsola glauca M.Bieb. , Caroxylon glaucum (M.Bieb.) Moq. , Aellenia glauca (M.Bieb.) Aellen , Aellenia glauca (M.Bieb.) (non Willd. 1798) nom. illeg ., Halothamnus heptapotamicus Botsch. ): It is hairless with 0.6 to 0.9 mm wide stamens.
  • Halothamnus glaucus subsp. hispidulus (Bunge) Kothe-Heinr. (Syn .: Caroxylon hispidulum Bunge , Salsola hispidula (Bunge) Boiss. , Salsola hispidula (Bunge) Bunge , nom. Inval., Aellenia glauca (M.Bieb.) Aellen subsp. hispidula (Bunge) Aellen , Aellenia hispidula (Bunge) Botsch. , Aellenia hispidula (Bunge) Aellen , nom. Inval., Halothamnus hispidulus (Bunge) Botsch. ): It is more densely hairy with only 0.5 to 0.7 mm wide stamens.
  • Halothamnus glaucus subsp. tianschanicus (Botsch.) Kothe-Heinr. (Syn .: Halothamnus tianschanicus Botsch. ): With trimmed scars.
