A retaining clip or retaining clip is a device for temporarily fastening objects to one another. Retaining clips are among the mounts and connecting elements . They are available in a wide variety of forms individually as well as part of consumer goods , where they offer an optional and universal attachment option. They are used in storage systems to fix objects. Retaining clips are also used in industrial production to attach cables and components as quick connections. The best-known holding clips are clothespins and the holding clips on writing implements such as ballpoint pens, mechanical pencils and fountain pens . Even paper clips and tie clips are in principle retainer clips.

Retaining clips are usually made of metal, wood or plastic, one or more parts, with resilient or permanently elastic elements. Often also as patented systems . They are offered by different manufacturers for very different areas of application.

Depending on the intended use, various DIN standards are used for holding clips, including DIN EN 71 for holding clips for pacifiers .
