history
First train station
The first station was built on the original route of the Main-Neckar-Bahn, on the corner of Donnersbergring and Bessunger Straße. On October 15, 1879, it was put into operation under the name Bessungen and renamed Darmstadt Süd on November 27, 1902 . It served the passenger and freight traffic.
Second train station
With the construction of the new Darmstadt main train station , the connecting routes also had to be moved to the west and lowered. The station got its current location and was rebuilt. The new station was opened together with the main station and Darmstadt Nord station on April 28, 1912. Scheduled traffic started using it from May 1, 1912.
During the First World War , the baggage, express goods and rail package traffic at the Darmstadt Süd stop was discontinued.
On January 1, 2008, the British real estate investor Patron Capital acquired the reception building as a package with other station buildings.
architecture
The design for the new Südbahnhof in classicism and homeland style comes from the building officer of the Mainz Railway Directorate, Friedrich Mettegang . The cubic building has a plastered facade and windows with horizontal bars and folding shutters. A balcony standing on four square columns shows the street front. A hipped roof forms the upper end of the building, with a wide, hipped bat dormer on the east side with a central round clock. The dormers have a wooden paneling, which is decorated with cassette and diamond motifs as well as twisted round columns.
Traffic importance

Since the 2011/2012 timetable change on December 11, 2011, the Südbahnhof has also been a stop for the Pfungstadtbahn that starts at Darmstadt Central Station (RB 66). In rush hour traffic, after stopping at Darmstadt main station, it continues to Groß-Umstadt Wiebelsbach / Erbach asRB 81 or. RE 80.
