history

The roots of the HCS Group and Haltermann Carless go back to two of the oldest chemical companies in the world and combine the work of two extraordinary individuals - Johann Haltermann and Eugene Carless:

  • Eugene Carless founded Carless, Capel & Leonard in Great Britain in 1859 and developed a new substance which was marketed under the name "Petrol". This made it possible to take on a pioneering role in the then flourishing automotive industry in the UK. In 2000 the company was bought by Petrochem, whereupon it traded as Petrochem Carless.
  • In the meantime, the company was founded in the Port of Hamburg in 1898 , which later became known as Johann Haltermann Mineralöl AG. The company began with a "tea brewery" and refined raw tar from the Hamburg gas works and eventually became a pioneer in the development of hydrocarbon specialties.

In 2001, Haltermann GmbH was taken over by Dow Chemical . In July 2011, Haltermann became an independent company again after it was sold by Dow Chemical to the private equity investor HIG Capital. From November 2011, Haltermann acted as Haltermann Holding GmbH. On April 15, 2013 the holding took over the shares of the British competitor Petrochem Carless Holding Limited (PCL). Since then, both companies have continued to operate under the umbrella of the HCS Group as an independent brand, Haltermann Carless.

In 2019, Haltermann Carless invested in a modern hydrogenation plant at the Speyer site. This makes it possible to produce a range of products that are particularly pure. In addition, new types of products and processes can be manufactured in an even more environmentally friendly way. Commissioning is planned for mid-2020. In 2019, Haltermann Carless celebrated its 160th company anniversary under the motto "A pioneer of high-value hydrocarbons".
