Haludaria is a South Asian genus of carp fish (Cyprinidae). All species of the genus are endemic only in southern India or Sri Lanka . The genus, which was only set up in summer 2012 (as Dravidia ), includes four species that were previously placed in the collective genus Puntius . The original generic name was derived from the Dravidian peoples , the inhabitants of southern India. At the beginning of 2013 it turned out that the original genus name Dravidia was alreadypreoccupiedfor agenus of meat flies and Haludaria was chosenas the new genus name, in memory of "Haludar", a Bengali artist whodrewfish illustrations for Francis Buchanan-Hamilton's work "Gangetic Fishes".

features

As fully grown fish, Haludaria species usually reach a standard length of less than 6 cm. Only the type species, the hot coal barbel ( Haludaria fasciata ), grows slightly larger with a maximum length of 8 cm. The body of the Haludaria species is laterally flattened and elongated. Diagnostic features of the genus are a pair of maxillary and rostral barbels (a total of four barbels on the upper jaw), a complete lateral line with 18 to 26 pore-provided scales, 4 unbranched and 8 branched dorsal fin rays, the last unbranched fin ray of the dorsal fin weakly developed and smooth, 3 unbranched and 5 branched anal fin rays, simple gill rakes (pointed, not branched or flattened like a lamella), the broad infraorbital bone No. 3 (bones around the eyes), which partially overlaps the gill cover , free uroneuralia and one or two wide black bands on the sides of the body between the dorsal and anal fin.
