Persson jumped on December 8, 1984 for the first time in Thunder Bay in a competition in the ski jumping World Cup . He reached the 8th place on the normal hill and with it his first World Cup points. He also finished eighth on the large hill the following day. So he was able to win his first World Cup points. In the Four Hills Tournament 1984/85 he was largely unsuccessful. On January 8, 1985, in the first competition after the Four Hills Tournament in Cortina d'Ampezzo, he was able to reach the podium for the first and only time in his career with second place. Two weeks later he won the silver medal on the large hill at the Norwegian Championships in Tromsø . In the following competitions it was difficult for Persson to get into the points. At the end of the World Cup season 1984/85 he still finished 17th in the overall standings. In the following years he was unable to build on this success. In the World Cup, he rarely achieved placements in the top twenty. In 1989 he won the bronze medal on the normal hill at the Norwegian Championship in Steinkjer behind Jon Inge Kjørum and Magne Johansen . At the Four Hills Tournament in 1989/90 he was able to jump into the rankings for the first time and ended up in 41st place in the overall tournament ranking. In the World Cup, however, there were no further successes, so that he retired from active ski jumping after the end of the season.
