Hamburg terror cell
The Hamburg terror cell was a group of radical Islamist Muslims in Hamburg who planned and carried out the attacks of September 11, 2001 . The alleged head of the Islamist terrorist group was Mohammed Atta , around whom an al-Qaeda cell was formed, with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed being the chief planner of the attack. The group's meeting point was an apartment at Marienstraße 54 in the Harburg district , which Atta shared with Ramzi Binalshibh and Said Bahaji . The members also frequented the Al-Quds mosque in Hamburg . All three suicide pilots in the cell belonged to the Salafist Islamic movement. In the group, conspiracy theories and anti-Semitism played a major role. In the trial of Mounir al-Motassadeq , witnesses testified that everything revolved around “the Jews ” and America. Al-Motassadeq is said to have declared that there will never be peace with Israel .
According to the Federal Prosecutor's Office , the group played a key role in the planning and execution of the attacks. The Hamburg Higher Regional Court ruled in 2003 that the Hamburg cell was not an independent sub-organization that was to be regarded as an independent terrorist organization within the meaning of Section 129a of the Criminal Code. However, this view was revised in the further course of the proceedings.
