Szulok [ ˈsulok ] ( German Sulk ) is a municipality in Somogy County in Hungary . It is located in the southern Hungarian lowlands about 15 km from the Croatian border, which is marked by the Drava .

Peculiarity of the community

Due to its previously very isolated location with regard to the cultural, religious and ethnic affiliation of the inhabitants, Szulok is a popular research object in European ethnology / folklore .

history

Germans from Swabia came to Szulok between 1750 and 1770 and entered the service of Count Ladislaus Szerseny. The village church was built in 1800 by the residents, who were exclusively Roman Catholic. The place was insofar as it was surrounded by purely Hungarian villages. In 1943 the village had about 2,000 inhabitants. In 1944 many voluntarily fled to Germany from the approaching Russian army, others were later forcibly resettled. There was drilling for oil in the 1960s. A thermal spring with excellent water quality was found. The simple bath with two smaller and one large swimming pool that was then built by the kolkhoz still exists today. However, the importance of the bath for tourism and thus for jobs was not recognized, and so most of the young people emigrated due to a lack of work. Today the place has just under 600 inhabitants.

Education and culture

The village has a kindergarten, a primary school, a choir and a traditional folk dance group.

tourism

The area, which is rich in game, attracts numerous hunters to Szulok, and a horse farm in the village offers horse lovers good riding opportunities. There are also good fishing opportunities.
