Hammerhead shark (band)
Hammerhai is a German-speaking ska-punk band from Hanover . In terms of style, Hammerhead is very independent due to the influences of hip-hop , metal , beat , reggae , hardcore punk and rock . Founded in 1997, the Hanoverians are considered pioneers of the German-language offbeat .
History and style
Typical of the band was the distinctive voice and the organ playing, which gave the songs a certain retro sound and NDW charm. Sometimes this is supplemented by a harmonica. Also typical for hammerhead and very atypical for ska bands was the lack of brass. The Ox-Fanzine described their style of music in 2006 as "steam ramming ska [...] which leaves its mark in the form of battered pogo penguins". In addition, the Ox attested both an inclination towards the off-beat and “eloquent German texts and yet catchy arrangements”. Michael Weber describes the lyrics in the Hanoverian music magazine Rockszene as “wonderfully weird”, Tobias Lehmann describes them in the same issue as “simply funny”, they are “criticism of the system, but which does not take itself fanatically seriously”. Since 2011 Hammerhai has occasionally been on the stages of the republic and plays with 2 guitarists.
Hammerhai has consisted of Christian "Sölti" Sölter (vocals, blues harp), Lennart Oheim (guitar), MC Timsen (guitar, vocals), Stefan "Tikkimann" Otto (bass, vocals) and Hagen Balke (drums) since summer 2017. Lennart Oheim also played in the band Tønstrøm , Lennart joined the band in 2002 and replaced the guitarist Pape who had left the band. Lennart's guitar playing seemed rockier than that of his predecessors. MC Timsen aka Tim Nilsen is a founding member of the band, but took a break between 2001 and 2011 and dedicated himself to the project accomplice. In January 2017 the band separated from their long-time drummer Mr. K. and found a young, extremely talented replacement in the summer of the same year in Hagen.
The hammerhead members are described by various media as typical Hanoverian scene veterans. Your permanent place of reference and performance in Hanover is the Béi Chéz Heinz , which, according to the rock scene, also hosts the band's most intense concerts. The close connection comes about, among other things, because hammerhead singer Sölter is also the program and press manager at Béi Chéz Heinz.
They feel particularly connected to the Hanover district of Linden . They dedicated their album Mein Kiez to the district and explained this to the Ox : "Linden is the much more casual, trashy, but definitely dignified and cozy side of Hanover".
While the band had around 50 gigs a year in the early years of its existence, it became less later because children, work, relocations, doctoral theses etc. required more attention. In 2006 the band played around 20 concerts a year. The live performance in particular received praise, while the band viewed their early records as "a little too clean and well-produced".
After Susii Liere left, hammerhead shark was on hold for a long time, and the members either oriented themselves to other bands or withdrew into private life. Eventually the rest of the band renamed themselves to Tentakel de Luxe except for Liere. In March 2009 the first appearance took place in the Béi Chéz Heinz. According to Tobias Lehmann on rockszene.de, Tentakel de Luxe played a rock-style program that offered a “colorful mix” of metal, stoner rock, psychoblues “and other styles of rock music”. According to Lehmann, the songs deal with tax returns.
In addition to hammerhead shark, Sölter is also active at Sölter & Kirleis, Sultan, the Fast Track Pirates and as a solo artist. He has published an audio book under the title The Den of Sins at the Breakfast Table and, with "Die Karawane der Papiertiger" (The Caravan of Paper Tigers), has brought a book onto the market with Blaulicht Verlag.
In December 2019 the album "Unterm Schnellweg" was released on Rockers Records, which reflects the current sound of the band and receives positive reviews.
