Han Kang (born November 27, 1970 in Gwangju , South Jeolla Province ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Han Kang is the daughter of the writer Han Seung-won (Han Sŭngwon) and was born in Gwangju in 1970, but grew up in Seoul from the age of eleven . She studied Korean literature at Yonsei University in Seoul and graduated there in 1993. Han made her debut with poetry that appeared in the magazine "Literature and Society" ( Munhak-kwa sahoe ), but soon afterwards she became known as a prose writer.

In 1994 she won the Seoul Shinmun newspaper's literary prize for her short story Red Sail ( 붉은 닻 Bulgeun Dat ) . After that, she wrote continuously and published several volumes of short stories.

In 1999 she won an award for the best Korean novel, in 2000 the "Young Artist Prize of Today" from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and finally in 2005 the Yi Sang Literature Prize .

In addition, she worked as a journalist for the magazines "Water of the deep source", "Journal of publications" and "Source". Her work The Vegetarian was filmed in 2010 and the short novel Baby Buddha served as the basis for the film Scar . Han currently teaches creative writing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts .

On May 16, 2016, she and her English translator , Deborah Smith, received the £ 50,000 Man Booker International Prize for their 2007 debut novel 채식주의 자 The Vegetarian . The novel focuses on the South Korean housewife Yeong-hye, who one day decides to only eat vegetarian food and removes all animal products from the household. Her passive rebellion takes on increasingly grotesque proportions when she begins to bare herself in public and dreams of a life as a plant, which is met with incomprehension and resistance from her family. In 2009 the work by Im U-seong was filmed. The novel was published in German in August 2016 under the title Die Vegetarianin . The protagonist is considered to be the first woman in the Byronic hero role .

In 2014, the novel The Boy Comes ( 소년 이 온다 Sonyŏn i onda ) was published in her homeland , in which she deals with the violent suppression of the Gwangju uprising (1980). A German translation of the book was published in 2017 under the title Menschenwerk .
