Hanang is a district in the Manyara region in Tanzania . The administrative center is in Katesh . The district is bordered by the Mbulu and Babati districts to the north, the Dodoma region to the south-east, the Singida region to the south-west and the west .

geography

Hanang has an area of ​​3639 square kilometers and around 280,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The district is located on the Northern Plateau of Tanzania at an altitude of 1600 to 1900 meters. From here, north of the city of Katesh, Mount Hanang rises 3420 meters high. The drainage takes place via mostly temporary rivers in lakes with no outflow, such as Lake Balangida on the border with Singida. The climate is warm and temperate, Cwb according to the effective climate classification . In Katesh it rains around 700 millimeters a year, mostly from December to April. The warmest month is November with an average of 20 degrees Celsius, the coolest is July with 16 degrees Celsius.

Hanang District was created in 1985 as the Arusha Region District . Since Manyara became a separate region in 2002, Hanang has been one of the five districts of Manyara.

population

The population rose from 185,081 in the 2002 census to 275,990 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of three percent and a doubling time of 23 years. In 2012, around sixty percent of the over-five-year-olds spoke Swahili, eight percent Swahili and English, and one third were illiterate.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 124 primary schools and 34 secondary schools in the district (as of 2020).
  • Health: There is a hospital, three health centers and 21 pharmacies for the medical care of the population. The most common illnesses for which people sought treatment were malaria, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infections, and diarrhea (as of 2002).

Economy and Infrastructure

The main economic activity is agriculture, alongside fishing and beekeeping.

  • Agriculture: In the past, agriculture in Hanang was mainly dominated by cattle breeders. In the last few decades, agriculture has expanded, displacing the indigenous community. Most of the arable farming is done by small farmers, there are some large wheat farms. The main staple foods are corn, millet, wheat, potatoes and beans. Coffee, sugar cane, sunflowers and bananas are grown for sale. In 2012, 270,000 cattle, 240,000 chickens and 230,000 goats were kept.
  • Fishing: Fish are caught in the Bassoutu, Balang'dalalu and Basodesh lakes.
  • Mining: There are gold deposits in the district, but they are not mined on a large scale.
  • Roads: The T14 national road runs through the district from Singida in the southwest to Babati in the northeast.

Attractions

  • Mount Hanang : Mount Hanang is a 5871 hectare national nature reserve, the center of which is Mount Hanang, which is 3,676 meters high. Due to the high rainfall, the area is the district's main source of water, largely forested and home to cliff divers, velvet monkeys, bush pigs, olive baboons, spotted hyenas and leopards. The forest stock is threatened by clearing for agriculture, charcoal production, logging, forest fires and also by gold mining.
