Handball Baden League
The Baden League (before the 2004/05 season Oberliga Baden ) is the highest division of the Baden Handball Association and the fifth highest in the game operations of the German Handball Federation .
The respective Baden league champion rises to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg .
history
Until the 1956/57 season, the Baden indoor handball champions were determined in a final round. For the 1957/58 season, the Baden League was introduced as the top division at the time. Up until the 1965/66 season, however, the qualification took place annually via the district eliminations, so that there was no real relegation and promotion until then. Champions and runners-up in the Baden League had the opportunity to qualify for the finals for the German championship via the South German Championship. With the introduction of the two-track Bundesliga (with the South and North squadrons), for which two clubs of the Badischer Handball Association ( SG Leutershausen and TSV Birkenau ) qualified, the Baden League became the second highest division and now played in a fixed league system - and descent. From 1967 to 1969, the champions had the opportunity to qualify for the Bundesliga in the following season via the South German finals, which only TSV Rintheim managed in 1969.
Until 1968, the championship was held in neutral halls with a shortened playing time (2 × 15 minutes). From the 1968/69 season, the league played in a single round (without the second half of the season) with home and away games and a playing time of 2 × 30 minutes. The double round with a return game, which is common in modern indoor handball, was introduced in 1972/73.
In 1969 the Regionalliga Süd was founded ( 3rd League South since 2010 ), making the Oberliga Baden only the third highest division. In 1981 the Baden League became the fourth highest division when the 2nd Bundesliga was founded above the Regionalliga. And after the three Baden-Württemberg regional associations (North) Baden, South Baden and Württemberg agreed on the introduction of a common division, the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg , for the 2000/01 season, the Baden League is the fifth highest division.
