Handwara is a city ( Municipal Committee ) in the northwest of the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It is located in Tehsil of the same name in the Kupwara district . In the 2011 census, the population was 13,600. The gender distribution is 843 women per 1000 men. Almost 90% are Muslims , 8.2% Hindus .
The city of Handwara is located in the north of the Kashmir Valley on the eastern foothills of the Pir Panjal at an altitude of 1605 m . The Talri River runs 2 km east of the city. Handwara is located 15 km south of the district capital Kupwara and 20 km northwest of Sopore .
