Hans-Dieter Ihlenfeldt

Hans-Dieter Ihlenfeldt (born July 17, 1932 in Kiel ) is a German botanist and university professor. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Ihlenf. "

Life

After graduating from high school in 1952, he studied botany, zoology and chemistry at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . He obtained his doctorate in 1958 with a thesis on the Mesembryanthemaceae under the supervision of Herbert Straka . For his doctoral thesis he used material from the collection established by Gustav Schwantes . Ihlenfeldt still knew Schwantes personally and he gave helpful tips on his doctoral thesis.

At the beginning of 1959 Ihlenfeldt became a scientific assistant at the State Institute for General Botany and Botanical Garden Hamburg . In the following years he occupied a. a. with the research of the genus Uncarina (Pedaliaceae). From 1960 he had contacts with botany colleagues in South Africa, and there were two botany excursions to Namaqualand and the Little Karoo . These excursions took place between 1961 and 1963 and were led by Hans Herre , the curator of the Stellenbosch Botanical Garden . From 1979 until his retirement in 1995, he was professor of botany at the University of Hamburg, specializing in morphology and systematics.

He was also President of the International Organization for Succulent Research from 1994 to 1998 . In 1994 he received the Cactus d'Or for his services in succulent research . Ihlenfeldt has described more than 40 plant species.

Hans-Dieter Ihlenfeldt married in 1960. He and his wife Margarete have four children.

Honors

The genus Ihlenfeldtia was named after Ihlenfeldt by H.EK Hartmann .
