Ihlenfeldtia is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the German botanist Hans-Dieter Ihlenfeldt (* 1932).

description

The plants of the genus Ihlenfeldtia grow compactly with extremely keel-shaped, papillary leaves .

The flowers stand individually over bracts and reach a diameter of more than 70 millimeters. Their petals are usually yellow and sometimes have tones of purple or red, especially on the outside. The stamens form an upright ring.

The plants bloom in their homeland in winter. The flowers open at noon and stay open until dusk.

The 10- to 15-fabulous capsule fruits are similar to those of the genus Titanopsis , but have small closure bodies. The small, smooth seeds are pear-shaped.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of the genus Ihlenfeldtia extends in the South African province of North Cape from Kenhardt in the municipality of Kai ǃGarib to the Namaqualand . The plants grow on white quartz slopes. The annual rainfall is approximately 125 millimeters.

The first description of the genus was published in 1992 by Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942). The type species is Ihlenfeldtia excavata . According to Hartmann, the genus Ihlenfeldtia includes the following two species:

The two types are allopatric , i. H. their distribution areas do not overlap.
