Hans-Dietrich Disselhoff

Hans-Dietrich Disselhoff , actually Johannes-Dietrich Disselhoff (* December 8, 1899 in Trebbin , † December 16, 1975 in Berlin ), was a German ethnologist , American scholar , cultural historian and literary scholar . He has authored many specialist books on Indian cultures in South and Central America .

Life

After graduating from high school (1918), he served for a short time in the First World War as a midshipman in the Imperial Navy , after the war he joined the Loewenfeld Freikorps .

Disselhoff studied from 1919 to 1923 at the universities of Freiberg (Saxony) , Freiburg im Breisgau , Munich , Göttingen and Berlin . It was not until 1929 that he was able to resume studies in Würzburg, where he worked under Professor Dr. Adalbert Hämel as Dr. phil. PhD.

During the economic crisis, he worked as a gardener, German teacher and stoker in Argentina (1923–1925), Spain (1925–1927) and Mexico (1927–1928, in Colima ) and also conducted field studies of South American and Indian culture.

After his doctorate, the first excavations followed in northwest Mexico (1930) and work at the Ethnographic Museum in Berlin (1931 volunteer, 1934 assistant, 1940 curator). A research trip on behalf of the museum took him from 1937 to 1939 to Peru and Ecuador .

In 1936 he married Johanna von Freydorf. During the Second World War he served as an officer in the Navy from 1940 .

In 1948 he became a research associate at the Museum of Ethnology in Munich. After a second trip to Peru (1953), he was appointed director of the Berlin Ethnographic Museum in 1954. In 1955 the museum was able to reopen in provisionally prepared rooms.

Hans-Dietrich Disselhoff died just a week after his 76th birthday in 1975 in Berlin and was buried in the Dahlem cemetery. The grave has not been preserved.
