Hans-Georg Münzberg

Hans-Georg Münzberg (born August 21, 1916 in Tetschen ; † November 7, 2000 in Munich ) was a German engineer who specialized in the development of aircraft turbines. He was involved in the development of the Snecma Atar jet engine in France and taught at the technical universities of TU Berlin and TH Munich .

Life

Münzberg was born in Tetschen (today Děčín) as the son of the factory owner Rudolf Münzberg. From 1934 he studied mechanical engineering at the German Technical University in Prague and obtained his diploma in 1939. He worked at the BMW aircraft engine works in Berlin-Spandau , where he specialized in aircraft gas turbines . As part of his research, he wrote a work "The equal-pressure gas turbine engine as a drive unit for high-speed aircraft" as a draft for a dissertation by the end of 1940. Since the work was classified as a secret matter of command by the Reich Aviation Ministry , he could not present it in Prague. He found a doctoral supervisor in Berlin in Heinrich Triebnigg, who headed the chair for aerospace engines at the Technical University of Berlin since it was founded in 1936. Münzberg took the oral exam there in 1942 and was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD.

In 1943 he became head of the Thermodynamics and Projects Department. After the Second World War he was questioned by the occupying powers about the development of the BMW 003 engine and had him write a report for the Research Department of the American Army. He worked in a group with French scientists, including Hermann Oestrich , in the so-called Atelier Technique Aéronautique Rickenbach (ATAR) in Rickenbach near Lindau , which developed the Snecma Atar engine. The group moved to France. In 1957, Münzberg was appointed professor at the Technical University of Berlin to the chair for aircraft engines. It was the first university to conduct research and teaching in this field again after the ban on activities in the aviation sector was lifted in 1953. Münzberg continued his work in France parallel to his teaching activities in Berlin, where he became director of research and development at Snecma in 1963 .

From 1964 Münzberg taught as a professor at the Technical University of Munich, where he founded the chair for aircraft propulsion systems. For this task he gave up his work in France and Berlin. He wrote basic textbooks on his research topics. In 1982 he retired.

Münzberg was elected as a member of the Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1981 . He was honored with the Médaille de l'Aéronautique of France in 1986. He died on November 7, 2000 in Munich.

Publications

Münzberg published specialist books in Springer Verlag , including flight propulsion systems in 1972 and gas turbines, operating behavior and optimization in 1977.
