Hans-Gunther Klein (born September 30, 1931 , † June 28, 1982 ) was a German theater founder and director .

Life

In 1957, Klein founded the Young Theater in Göttingen , which under his leadership developed into a recognized stage and also achieved a high artistic reputation beyond the city limits. He was called Scheff by his co-workers .

In 1964 he visited Paris to win the French chanson singer Barbara for a guest performance at his theater. Initially, a performance in Germany was out of the question for the singer, who was born in 1930 and came from a Jewish family, because as a Jew she had to flee from the Germans during the German occupation of France in World War II . After a brief period of reflection, however, Klein received her approval on the condition that a black salon grand piano was made available to her in Göttingen .

The gig took place on July 4, 1964. Despite a strike by the piano transporters, Klein succeeded in replacing the piano in his theater with the one that had been promised. After this first, spontaneously successful evening, Barbara decided to stay longer in Göttingen, “fell in love with the city” and finally composed her chanson Göttingen in the garden of the Junge Theater , with which she became a star in France and also in Germany Translation in the Federal Republic was a great success.

On September 4, 1982, Hans-Gunther Klein was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor of the City of Göttingen .
