from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Heinrich Hugo Hermann Möbius (born October 14, 1929 in Ostrau , Saxony , †  October 14, 2011 in Greifswald ) was a German chemist . From 1990 to 1995 he was a professor at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald and made important contributions to the construction of the lambda probe used in gasoline engines and the development of solid oxide fuel cells with his research .

Life

Hans-Heinrich Möbius was born in 1929 in Ostrau , Saxony , and studied chemistry at the University of Rostock from 1949 to 1954 , where he then worked as a research assistant and in 1959 also obtained his doctorate . He then worked initially as a senior research assistant and, after completing his habilitation in 1966, as a lecturer at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

In 1990 he was appointed associate professor for physical chemistry at Greifswald University and in 1992 full professor for electrochemistry . He retired three years later and subsequently worked as a scientific consultant for various companies.

Hans-Heinrich Möbius was married and the father of two sons and a daughter. He died in Greifswald in 2011.

Scientific work

Hans-Heinrich Möbius focused his research on electrochemical aspects of solid-state chemistry . His research results were, among other things, of importance for the construction of the lambda probe , which is mainly used in gasoline engines of passenger cars to measure the oxygen content in the combustion exhaust gas . He also contributed to the development of solid oxide fuel cells . He supervised around 100 diploma, doctoral and post-doctoral theses and published more than 120 scientific publications . He was also the co-author of two textbooks and the owner of around 50 patents .

Awards

Hans-Heinrich Möbius was awarded the honorary title of Honored Inventor in the German Democratic Republic in 1989 . In 1996 he received the Christian Friedrich Schönbein Medal of Honor from the European Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Forum in recognition of his work on solid oxide fuel cells.
