Hans-Jürgen Duchstein

Hans-Jürgen Duchstein (born April 17,  1949 in Berlin ) is a German chemist , pharmacist , university professor and basketball player .

Life

Duchstein completed his school education with the Abitur at the Eckener-Gymnasium in Berlin-Mariendorf and studied chemistry from 1968 to 1973 at the Free University of Berlin . He wrote his doctoral thesis (“(Photo) chemical investigations on 5-deazaflavins”) at the Institute for Pharmacy at the Free University of Berlin and completed it in 1977. In 1980, in a second degree, Duchstein obtained another university degree in pharmacy from the Free University of Berlin .

From 1980 he worked as a university lecturer for pharmacy at the Free University of Berlin, in 1990 his habilitation was on the subject of “Characterization of active oxygen species in selected model reactions. Contributions to the mechanisms of biologically relevant oxygenation processes ”. In 1996 Duchstein took up  a professorship for pharmaceutical chemistry at the Institute for Pharmacy at the University of Hamburg , which he held until he retired in 2015. In 2001 Duchstein became chairman of the Hamburg regional group of the German Pharmaceutical Society . The focus of his scientific work included the subject areas of reactive nitrogen species, genotoxicity of nitrogen species, reactive oxygen species and cytochrome P-450 as well as detection methods for designer drugs in saliva.

Duchstein, a 1.83 meter tall construction player, played with the Neukölln Sportfreunde in the basketball league in the late 1960s / early 1970s . As a player, trainer and functionary (among other things as the person responsible for Germany for the senior basketball world association FIMBA), Duchstein, known in basketball circles under the nickname "Ducki", remained connected to his sport even in retirement, played for the old men of the BG Halstenbek / Pinneberg and recorded Participates in championships at federal and transnational level, including world championships. Duchstein has been called the "pioneer of German senior basketball".
