Pandel's research interests are the theory of history , the history of historiography and the didactics of history. He is one of the representatives of a critical and communicative history didactics that place less emphasis on acquired overview knowledge than on their own historical thinking . He rejects the demand for fixed year catalogs for learners and the predominant teaching in schools largely as pure reproductive learning .

Pandel co-edited several school books and helped shape the history curriculum in Saxony-Anhalt . His approach of a method curriculum parallel to the historical content was innovative. In 2005 he also presented his own competency model for historical learning, which differed greatly from others .
