Hans-Joachim Behr (archivist)

Hans-Joachim Behr (born January 23, 1930 in Lüneburg ) is a German archivist and historian. He was head of the North Rhine-Westphalian State Archives in Münster and is honorary professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University . He published numerous writings, mostly on regional history topics.

Life

After completing secondary school, Hans-Joachim Behr worked as a farmer and obtained the title of engineering degree. After completing his Abitur, he studied history and German at the University of Göttingen and the University of Hamburg from 1957 , with Percy Ernst Schramm and Alfred Heuss , among others and Hermann Heimpel . He was in Hamburg in 1963 when Otto Brunner with a dissertation on the deposit lock policy of the city of Lüneburg in the 15th and 16th centuries Dr. phil. PhD. After receiving his doctorate, Behr was archivist at the Lower Saxony State Archives in Osnabrück from 1963 to 1974 and then archivist at the Münster State Archives . He was the head of this archive from 1979 until his retirement in 1995.

Behr is a member of the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen and the Historical Commission for Westphalia . Between 1989 and 2005 he was also a member of the Historical Commission for Church Contemporary History in Westphalia. Between 1989 and 2000 he was also director of the Association for History and Archeology of Westphalia, Department of Münster, 1985–1997 Vice Chairman of the Brauweiler District for Contemporary History and 1980–2005 co-editor of the Düsseldorfer Schriften. In 2001 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.
