Hans-Joachim Herrmann (biologist)

Hans-Joachim Herrmann , also Hajo Herrmann (* 1958 in Gotha ), is a German biologist , zoologist , herpetologist, author, journalist and editor-in-chief.

Live and act

Hans-Joachim Herrmann is the son of the technical college teacher Annelise Herrmann. After studies, research studies and aspirantur at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University Greifswald and at the Severzov Institute for Evolutionary Morphology of Animals (Academy of Sciences) in Moscow, he obtained his diploma in 1983 with an immunological topic on frogs. In 1991 he received his doctorate with a topic on frog systematics . His specialty, amphibians , has shaped his work as a biologist and author to this day.

After graduating, he worked in the Dresden Zoological Garden. In 1986 he became director of the Natural History Museum Schloss Bertholdsburg in Schleusingen, South Thuringia. Herrmann built the amphibian vivarium with the most species at the time there . In 1992 he switched to Tetra GmbH and, in addition to specialist books and calendars, published the second oldest German-language magazine for aquaristics and terraristics ("TI-Magazin", today "Aquaristik-Fachmagazin"). In December 1997 Herrmann founded Tetra Verlag GmbH; since 1999 he has been the sole partner and managing director. He acts as editor-in-chief of the "Aquaristik-Fachmagazin".

Herrmann is the author or co-author of more than 1000 scientific and above all popular scientific individual publications; including more than 30 books, some translated into five languages. His specialist articles have also appeared in leading international journals and his books in well-known publishers. He also illustrated calendars, postcards, posters and art prints.

Herrmann also acted as a presenter on a talk show, television broadcasts and radio broadcasts. In addition, he wrote satire, fiction and poetry, some of which he processed in his own stage programs.
