Hans Joachim Koppitz

Hans Joachim Koppitz (born February 8, 1924 in Baitzen , Lower Silesia (now Byczeń, Poland); † October 25, 2015 ) was a German book historian and book scholar.

Life

Koppitz studied German, philology and library sciences. In 1954 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate, the title of the dissertation was Wolframs Religiosität: Observations on the relationship of Wolframs von Eschenbach to the religious tradition of the Middle Ages . In 1972 he completed his habilitation in Cologne with the thesis Studies on the transmission of secular Middle High German epics in the 15th and early 16th centuries ( ISBN 3-7705-1190-5 ). In 1973 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Cologne . From 1976 until his retirement in 1992, he held the Gutenberg Chair at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as a professor of books, writing and printing . He was also head of the Institute for Book Studies at the University of Mainz. He built up the course on publishing practice and was committed to setting up a teaching print shop at the university.

One of his main research areas was the prehistory of modern copyright law , in particular the imperial printing privileges up to 1806. He was editor of the Gutenberg yearbook for many years . He has published numerous academic papers, including 47 books.

He initiated a research project on the development of Hebrew typography in German-speaking countries, which was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
