Hans-Wolfgang Helb (born December 15, 1941 in Chemnitz ) is a German zoologist , ecologist , ornithologist and bioacoustic specialist. He is the author of specialist and popular science articles and books.

Career

From 1972 to 2007, Helb was a lecturer in the biology department at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern , and also at the universities in Landau / Pfalz, Koblenz and Trier. He is also active on a voluntary basis in the field of nature conservation and environmental protection, including as a consultant for nature conservation authorities, as a speaker and excursion leader.

Helb was a member and chairman of the advisory boards for state conservation (nature conservation) in the city, district, structural and approval department south (SGD Süd) and the environment ministry of Rhineland-Palatinate.

From 1998 to 2006 Helb was Vice President and from 2006 to 2015 President of POLLICHIA . Under the presidency of Hans-Wolfgang Helb, the natural research association opened up to broad groups of the population in Rhineland-Palatinate. The POLLICHIA significantly supported new approaches of citizen participation in nature research emerging in Germany, especially the Citizen Science project ArtenFinder Rhineland-Palatinate.

Since the foundation of the Palatinate Museum for Natural History Association in 1998, he was initially a member of the Scientific Advisory Board as a representative of POLLICHIA until 2015, then a member of the association's assembly and deputy chairman of the board.

In the German Ornithological Society (DO-G) Helb was active between 1984 and 2002 in the function of the advisory board member and on the board of the press spokesman, the secretary and as general secretary.

On November 10, 2005, Hans-Wolfgang Helb received the Medal of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. At the ceremony in the SGD South's large meeting room, President Weichel particularly emphasized the 63-year-old's voluntary work.

In 2006 Hans-Wolfgang Helb played a key role in the re-establishment of the Georg von Neumayer Foundation. He led this as chairman of the foundation until 2016. This phase of the foundation was crowned by the construction and opening of the foundation's own House of Biodiversity in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse in 2015.

In 2018, Wolfgang Helb was made an honorary member of the board of the Georg von Neumayer Foundation for his services to the establishment of the House of Biodiversity in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.
