The Hans-und-Hilde-Coppi-Gymnasium is a high school in the Berlin district of Karlshorst , which is named after the two Nazi resistance fighters Hans Coppi and Hilde Coppi . The school was inaugurated as a community school in 1935 and has since had different names.

history

The grammar school was re-established in 1991 from a former high school in the Lichtenberg district of Karlshorst . It is located in a school building built between 1935 and 1937 by the architect Friedrich Hennings as a community school and under monument protection. In 1963 the school received an extension. In the 1970s, the East Berlin school administration renamed the extended secondary school the Hans-Coppi secondary school . The normal high school had this name since 1958.

In 1991/1992 the schools in the area of the former GDR had to give up their names. The Hans-Coppi-Oberschule was named 6th grammar school. A new name should now be found in a democratic way. Two suggestions with local references - Römergymnasium (after the adjacent street) and Gymnasium Karlshorst - and two personal names were shortlisted. The chemist and GDR civil rights activist Robert Havemann or the reassignment of the honorary name Hans and Hilde Coppi were available for selection. The student council and the majority of the students spoke out in favor of the Hans and Hilde Coppi Oberschule , after a school in Berlin-Buch had just been named Robert Havemann School . After a lengthy discussion process, the school was finally given its chosen honorary name in a ceremony on October 20, 1994, at which Hans Coppi , the son of Hans and Hilde Coppi, was present. The honor goes to the two anti-fascists from the Rote Kapelle group who were executed in Plötzensee . In this sense, the grammar school sees itself as committed to general humanistic education as it is to education for democracy and peace. On the school's website it says, justifying the naming:

The choice of the school name was a decision for people with courage, for young people who did not accept injustice, who did not look the other way, who opposed criminal violence and were executed by the fascists. (...) Because a school name is chosen with care, must not become a formality and should be present in everyday school life. "

In the foyer there is a bust of Hans Coppi, which was created by a student. A small exhibition about Hans and Hilde Coppi can be seen in the new building.

The district office of Berlin-Lichtenberg decided in February 2005 to merge the Hans-und-Hilde-Coppi-Gymnasium with the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium at its Lückstrasse location. Part of the decision was that the Georg-Forster-Gymnasium should leave its location on Dolgenseestrasse and move to Römerweg. The District Assembly (BVV) approved this resolution. By contrast, a focused public petition , the first in Berlin at the district level held referendum conducted on 17 September, 2006. The citizens of the Lichtenberg district voted with a clear majority in favor of maintaining the music-oriented Hans-und-Hilde-Coppi-Gymnasium at the Römerweg location, so that the decision of the district office had to be repealed.

On the afternoon of July 3, 2013, the gym was destroyed by fire. After a non-open competition in 2014, the district office decided to build a new sports hall, which will be built according to a design by Leipzig architects Schulz und Schulz Architekten GmbH . The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on April 19, 2016 .

School profile

The Coppi-Gymnasium has been an artistic and music-oriented high school since 1992. Regular school concerts, annual musicals , regular art exhibitions by students and artists in the school gallery and theater performances emphasize this profile. Schoolchildren receive special musical support in instrumental lessons as well as in choir and orchestra training. There are two choirs, a chamber choir, orchestra, wind ensemble, percussion group and dance. In addition to the school language training in English, French and Latin, there is the possibility of learning Spanish. Since 2006 , events on literature, technology and politics have been held as part of the Future Forum - Coppi-Gym series .

The school takes part in the Berlin program for in-depth professional orientation (BvBO) and offers its students support in professional orientation and career choice.
