from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans A. Kretzschmar (born January 3, 1953 , † January 12, 2014 ) was a German physician ( pathologist ). Most recently he was director of the Center for Neuropathology and Prion Research at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Career

Kretzschmar studied medicine at the University of Munich. As a post-doctoral student, he conducted research on prions from 1983 to 1986 with Stanley B. Prusiner at the University of California, San Francisco . He then spent a year with Charles Weissmann in the Institute for Molecular Biology at the University of Zurich before completing his habilitation in Munich. From 1992 to 2000 he was professor and head of the neuropathology department at the University of Göttingen . There he also headed the National Reference Center for Prion Diseases. Since 2000 he has been director of neuropathology at the University of Munich. He was an advisor to the European Union and WHO on prion disease issues. He was head of the Reference Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and the Reference Center for Prion Diseases of the German Society for Neuropathology and Neuroanatomy (DGNN) and the National Reference Center for Human Spongiform Encephalopathies of the Robert Koch Institute .

In Göttingen he was involved in the development of a diagnostic method for prion molecules, which could be detected for the first time in the spinal fluid of Creutzfeld-Jakob patients, for example.

His research group succeeded in the cell-free reproduction of artificial prions with PMCA (protein misfolding cyclic amplification, developed by Claudio Soto, University of Texas) and the detection of the triggering of prion diseases with the artificially produced molecules.

He played a leading role in setting up a European brain tissue database (BrainNet Europe).

In 1999 he received the Ernst Jung Prize . He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath).
