Hans Bühler was born on January 22nd, 1915 in Neu-Ulm as the son of the yeast trader and beer brewer Johannes Bühler and his wife Rosina. He spent the first years of his life in what was then the fire department store in Gartenstrasse, which is now the Neu-Ulm Music School. After graduating from school, he completed an apprenticeship as a painter and house painter. In 1935 he did six months' Reich labor service in Thuringia in what is now the twin town of Neu-Ulms, Meiningen .

On returning to Neu-Ulm, Bühler increasingly occupied himself with sculpture, which he taught himself. As a 23-year-old he caused a sensation in the art scene with a portrait of the then Chancellor Hitler , whom he had depicted in half relief on the occasion of his 50th birthday .

Hans Bühler died two weeks before turning 59 on January 6, 1974 in his hometown of Neu-Ulm. He found his final resting place in the city cemetery, where his grave has been preserved.
